Acceptable Use Policy for AI Tools

This guide tells you how to use computer writing tools like ChatGPT for your school work in a good and honest way. These rules apply to all students enrolled at LETU Mongolia American University

When You Can Use AI Tools

  • You can use AI tools like ChatGPT to help you with ideas, research, and making your writing better.
  • These tools should not do all the work for you, and should instead be used as an aid in your work.

How to Use AI Tools in Coursework

  • Use APA style to say where it came from. For example: ("Generated by ChatGPT," n.d.).
  • Your work should show your own thoughts and ideas.
  • ChatGPT and other AI tools are not considered primary sources, and should not be used as citations in your work.

Tips for Using AI Tools Effectively

  • Let your instructor know if you used ChatGPT a lot for your work. These tools are new for us as well, and we would like to learn how to use them better.
  • Teachers might use a plagiarism detection tool to check if you copied your work. This tool also detects the amount of text in a paper that is suspected of being AI generated. These tools may be used as a guide to determine if you are following this policy and the university plagiarism policy.
  • AI tools are great at fixing grammar. As such, try to make your work have no mistakes and be easy to understand. Instructors will expect your writing to be free of grammar and spelling mistakes.
  • Your work should show what you understand and your own ideas.

Penalties if You Violate This Policy

  • If a work is completely or mostly created using an AI tool, it will be considered a plagiarized assignment.
  • At minimum the student should expect to receive a 0 for that assignment as punishment for violating this policy.
  • Repeated violates may result in failing the course in which the policy was violated.
